Apodemus Division. Diagnosed by Niethammer (1978d) using skeletal and soft tissues, body size, and A. argenteus as the sole member of the third group. In Japan, two endemic species of cavity-nesting small rodents, the Japanese dormouse Glirulus japonicus and the small Japanese field mouse Apodemus argenteus (Kaneko 2005), have overlapping distributions in the montane and alpine forests of the central Honshu region (Kawamichi 1996, Abe et al. 2008). On the other hand, Apodemus argenteus, the smaller of the two species, showed a similar level of sequence divergence (maximum of 3%) but no substantial geographic differentiation: populations in Apodemus argenteus [2] [3] är en däggdjursart som först beskrevs av Coenraad Jacob Temminck 1844.
