In the relatively short time that synchrotrons have been available to the scientific community, their characteristic beams of UV and X-ray radiation have been applied to virtually all areas of medical science which use ionizing radiation. Synchrotron Radiation Research Synchrotron radiation is highly directional light made from electrons and positrons which have been accelerated by an accelerator nearly to the speed of light. While synchrotron radiation is a powerful tool in material and biomedical sciences, it is still underutilized in plant research. This mini review attempts to introduce the potential of synchrotron-based spectroscopic and imaging methods and their applications to plant sciences.
Today synchrotron radiation is one of the primary tools for studying surfaces, and synchrotron radiation has affected many other areas of condensed-matter physics---even superconductivity. Although synchrotron radiation research began in the early 1960s, most of the work until 1974 was concentrated in the ultraviolet part of the spectrum, and almost all the sources were synchrotrons. Starting in about 1974, a new generation of multi-GeV storage rings became avail-able (SPEAR, DORIS, VEPP-3).
